Star Wars: Exploring the epic struggle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker

Look at the struggle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. On the surface it looks like a fight to the death between father and son. Symbolically, their struggle can be understood to be about aspects of themselves that have either been lost or have not yet been awakened. For Darth, his humanity, all but lost. For Luke, accessing his developing power.

When Darth battles Luke, there are moments when we can see the internal struggle between humanity and mechanization, good and evil. Darth does not kill Luke. In the struggle, his choice to let Luke live is the beginning of his own rebirth cycle.

Darth had lived, became severely injured, and physical and psychic parts of him (love, compassion, empathy, reasoning) became buried deeper in his psyche. His meeting and epic struggle with Luke created a humanistic spark in Darth that eventually led to his redemption as a Jedi knight later in the adventure.

More later on Luke…
