How can you tell you are not as smart as you think?

Glenn Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee and writer, tells a story of Alan Dershowitz trying to act like the smartest person in the courtroom, and thus proving he was not.

In his blog, Instapundit.com, Glenn says,

“I once saw Alan Dershowitz argue an appeal back when I was a law clerk. He made clear from the beginning that he thought he was the smartest guy in the room — which, as one of the other clerks remarked later, proved that he wasn’t. He lost…”

So, the lesson to learn is a person with healthy self-esteem will tell the truth in a compassionate way. A person tending towards the narcissistic end of the continuum will find ways to be a bully, even an intellectual bully.

In this case, the intellectual bully turned out to not be so smart.
