Healing from trauma: journaling or expressive writing can help

Published by at 1:17 pm under Counseling & Psychotherapy

Journaling or expressive writing about goals, challenges, joys, and other significant life experiences has been proven by research to be helpful for people who have survived challenging or traumatic live experiences.

The specific benefits can include…

  • Better physical health
  • higher academic grades
  • better self-esteem
  • improved mood
  • improved working memory

Interestingly, researchers are not yet sure why expressive writing is so beneficial.

The theory that makes the most sense is that the writing process helps to create a cohesive narrative about the difficult or traumatic life events that help shape people’s lives.
